Siswa Gagal UN Tidak Bisa ke Sekolah Negeri

Dinas Pendidikan Kabupaten Rembang menyatakan siswa SMP yang gagal ujian nasional (UN) tidak bisa mendaftar ke sekolah negeri, sebab pelaksanaan ujian nasional kesetaraan digelar setelah masa penerimaan peserta didik baru (PPDB) SMA negeri berakhir.

"Ini sudah menjadi risiko siswa yang gagal UN. Namun, mereka tetap bisa mendaftar ke sekolah swasta,," kata Kepala Dinas Pendidikan Kabupaten Rembang Dandung Dwi Sucahyo di Rembang, Sabtu.

Dandung menjelaskan pelaksanaan UN kesetaraan paket B untuk tingkat sekolah menengah pertama (SMP) baru digelar pada 12 Juli hingga 14 Juli 2011, padahal PPDB SMA negeri di Kabupaten Rembang serentak dimulai 27 Juni hingga 1 Juli 2011.

Dengan begitu, katanya, siswa eks sekolah formal yang mengikuti ujian nasional kesetaraan, tidak bisa mendaftarkan diri ke SMA negeri.

Dandung mengatakan, mengenyam pendidikan di sekolah negeri atau swasta sama saja.

"Sekolah negeri atau swasta sama saja, tergantung kemauan serta semangat belajar setiap siswa agar bisa bersaing," katanya.

Meski kesempatan mendaftar sekolah negeri hampir pasti tertutup, kata Dandung, belum ada satu pun siswa eks sekolah formal yang mengundurkan diri sebagai peserta ujian nasional kesetaraan paket B.

"Dari 67 siswa SMP atau setingkatnya yang gagal UN 2011, sebanyak 63 siswa di antaranya yang mendaftar ujian nasional kesetaraan dan belum ada satupun yang mengundurkan diri hingga Sabtu (25/6)," katanya. (ANT/K004) Antara News

Batam`s junior Red Cross rated best at Asia-Pacific jamboree

The Batam chapter of the Indonesian Junior Red Cross (PMR) was selected as the best teenage contingent at the "Youth and Volunteer Camp Asia Pacific Jamboree" in Malaysia recently, a PMR spokesperson said.

The Batam city`s PMR contingent was considered to be the most active and friendly during the event that was attended by more than 10 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, said Nurmilasari, head of the contingent, here on Friday.

The election was conducted through questionnaires among about 2,500 participants of the jamboree organized by Malaysia`s Crescent and took place in Kelantan, Malaysia.

"The questionnaire results showed that the Indonesian contingent was hospitable and most active in participating in the jamboree`s programs," she said.

UGM to hold seminar on nutraseutical products

Gadjah Mada University (UGM) will hold a national seminar on the benefits, safety and development prospects of nutraseutical products on June 25.

The chairman of the event`s organizing committee, Dr. Tanti Irianti of the university`s Pharmaceutic Faculty, said nutraseutical products were now consumed widely in various parts of the world, including Indonesia.

But systematic, continuous and comprehensive scientific studies and research still needed to be done to ensure the good quality of nutraseutical products quality is accountable, Irianti said.

"If necessary, clinical trials should be performed to determine the right doses before it is used to prevent certain diseases," she said.

According to Irianti, two-thirds of Americans and 47 percent of Japanese today were consumers of at least one nutraseutical product.

The word nutraseutical which is a combination of the terms "nutrition" and "pharmaceutical" denotes a food or food component that is beneficial for human health or the prevention or treatment of various diseases.

On the same occasion, Dr.Abdul Rohman, said nutraseutical products contain isolated nutrients, food supplements, dietary food through specific engineering, herbal products and some processed consumer products such as cereals, soup and beverage products.

At the molecular level, researchers and health practitioners are still trying to integrate and analyze information about the nutraseutical product utilization clinical data, both in modern and alternative medicine therapies practice.

In the US, nutraseutical product sales turnover is estimated at 86 billion dollars a year (about Rp731 trillion), while in Europe and Japan valued at 6 billion U.S. dollars (about Rp27 trillion).

"These data clearly proved nutraseutical is a product with a very promising developing market," said Abdul.

In a one-day seminar themed "Nutraseutical, Benefits, Security and Development" will also invited Dr. Sumantri M.Sc., Apt. from the University`s Pharmacy Faculty who presenting his paper "Prospects and Use of Honey as Nutraseutical".

Another speaker Prof. Dr. dr. Sugeng Yuwono from UGM Medical Faculty who will also presenting his paper "Nutraseutical Use Aspects in Medical Field" along with guest speakers, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amin Ismail from the Medicine Faculty of the University Putra Malaysia with his presentation "Nutraseutical: Source, Potential Health and Security".

Irianti said that participants who are expected to attend the seminar might varied from the pharmaceutical industry, processed food products and supplements, businessmen, academics, students and the general society.

Yudhoyono appreciates early environment education

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed his appreciation to teachers and schools that have conducted environment education for their students from elementary to senior high school level.

"Anyone who knows education thinks that the first 12 years is the golden age for building one`s character and behavior," he said in his speech at the Environment Day commemoration at the Presidential Palace here on Tuesday.

President Yudhoyono said efforts by the teachers and schools must be supported so that more and more children of Indonesia would be made aware of the importance of the environment.

On the occasion, President Yudhoyono presented awards for schools that have environment outlook.

Among the elementary schools receiving the awards are SDN 12 Bendungan Hilir, Jakarta, SDN 9 Bantarjati, Bogor, West Java, SDN4 Metro, Lampung, SDN Kandangan III Surabaya, SDN 001 Lima Puluh, Pekanbaru, Riau, SDN Dinoyo III, Malang, East Java, and DDN 005 Bukit Raya, Pekanbaru, Riau.

Awards for junior high schools went to SMPN 2 Kebomas, Gresik, East Java, SMPN 1 Merakurak, Tuban, East Java, SMPN 10, Sukabumi, West Java, SMPN 10 Samarinda, East Kalimantan, SMPN 1, Cigombong, Sukabumi, West Java, SMP Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta and SMP 1 Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

Senior high schools receiving the awards were SMA 10 Malang, East Java, SMKN 1 Probolinggo, East Java, SMAN 1 Wringinanom, Gresik, East Java, SMAN 5 Jember, East Java, SMAN 2 Wonosari, Yogyakarta, SMAN 1 Bandar Bener Meuriah, Aceh, and SMAN 1 Geger, Madiun, East Java.

President Yudhoyono on the occasion also presented "Kalpataru" award for environment saviors and "Adipura" award for city environment and cleanliness.

Receiving environment pioneer awards meanwhile were Sugiarto from Cowek village, Pasuruan, East Java, Marmis Asid from Jalan Lintas Talu Panti, West Pasaman, West Sumatra and Lulut Sri Yeliani from Surabaya, East Java.

The award for environment service went to Soleman Ngongo from Tematana village, South West Sumbawa, East Nusa Tenggara, Surjadi SP from Bangli, Bali, and Sudarli from Purwodadi, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta.

Aang Hamid Suganda from Kuningan, West Java, and Krido Suprayitno from Sendangtirto, Sleman, Yogyakarta, received awards for environment development.

Adipura recipients include Surabaya and Palembang for metropolitan category, Yogyakarta and Pekanbaru for big city category. Seventeen medium-sized and 42 small cities also received the award.

The commemoration was attended by all cabinet ministers, heads of state institutions and other officials.

Aussie eyeing cooperation with UGM

The Australian government is looking into the possibility of enhanced cooperation with Yogyakarta-based Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in developing education and human resources.

"We are looking forward to cooperating with UGM in student exchange and scholarship programs," Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Greg Moriarty said here on Wednesday.

At a meeting with UGM Rector Sudjarwadi, the Australian ambassador also invited UGM to attend a workshop to discuss cooperation with the Australian education ministry.

Moriarty expressed hope that the number of UGM students who would pursue higher education in the neighboring country would increase in the future.

"We should like to express our gratitude to UGM for its collaboration and support through the Acicis program in helping educate Australian students. This is good collaboration and I hope there will be other cooperation in the future," he said.

Sudjarwadi meanwhile said he welcomed the Australian government`s offer to cooperate with UGM in enhancing cooperation in the future.

He also expressed hope there would be close cooperation between the two countries especially in the education field.

"Looking ahead, we hope the cooperation could be enhanced so that it would contribute to the progress of the two countries` education sector," he said.

RI Embassy, Belgian Firm Agree to Cooperate in Education Sector

The Indonesian embassy in Brussels and Belgian retail company Colruyt have agreed to help develop the education sector in the two countries.

Indonesian Ambassador to Belgium Arif Havas Oegroseno reached the agreement at a meeting with Sylvie Reyntens and Sarah Gerard representing Colrupt in Brussels recently, Royhan N. Wahab, the embassy`s third secretary for educational, social and cultural affairs, said in an e-mailed statement on Sunday.

Sylvie Reyntens and Sarah Gerard said the company has provided educational assistance to educational institutions in Indonesia as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), the statement said.

Ambassador Oegroseno hailed the Colruyt program as complement to the Indonesian education program.

He said the Indonesian government has adopted a scholarship scheme called Dhamasiswa that allows foreign students to study more about Indonesia at a number of institutes of higher learning in the country.

Belgium is one of the countries which routinely sends any of its citizens to take part in the Dharmasiswa program, he said.

He expressed hope that more and more foreign students will benefit from the program. Therefore, Colruyt can play a more active role in the program by taking advantage of their networking in Belgium.

The Colruyt representatives said the Dharmasiswa program is interesting and pledged to send more Belgian students to take part in the program.

Likewise, the company also offered scholarships to Indonesian students to pursue higher education in Belgium.

President Visits Jayapura

Jayapura, Papua, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met with Papuan and West Papuan provincial government officials here Sunday evening for talks about accountable asset and financial management.

The upgrading program, which took place at the state building of Papuan governor`s residential complex, was aimed at improving accountability of those in charge of managing the provinces` assets and financial resources.

The program was organized by the Papuan and West Papuan provincial governments in cooperation with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the Financial Supervisory and Development Agency (BPKP).

President Yudhoyono is in the Papuan capital of Jayapura for a two-day working visit.
On Monday, the head of state would attend the opening session of the 2010 national meeting of the Student Executive Board (BEM) at the Cendrawasih State University.

Cabinet ministers, military and police high officials joining the the president`s activity included Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare Agung Laksono, Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi, Finance Minister Agus Martowardoyo, Agriculture Minister Suswono, and National Education Minister M Nuh.
