"On this podium, I want to tell those who are irresponsible, like cutting trees, and destroy mother nature due to their mismanaged mining activities, please stop doing that," he said here Sunday.
Speaking at the Indonesian planting tree day, held in Cibinong village, Jatiluhur subdistrict, West Java district of Purwakarta, Indonesia would suffer long-term losses if
its forests were not well managed from this time.
"If we keep planting a billion trees and make it our national movement, in which the government is not the only party involving in it, with God`s willing, our country will have a good environment within the coming 30 years," he said.
The head of state said the efforts to plant trees would not give significant benefits if they were not followed by good care. With the good care, the trees would grow up and give long term benefits.
Therefore, President Yudhoyono urged the entire nation to start building the planting tree culture.
"Build the culture from our hearts and minds. All should be started from loving the mother nature. I often say `plant today for tomorrow`s harvest`," he said.
At the occasion, the head of state also asked the environment ministry to tighten its assessments for the Adipura award recipients.
"The cities, which had been awarded the Adipura in the past but failed to remain committed to maintaining their clean environments, their Adipura awards can be withdrawn," he said.
The event was attended by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Vice President Boediono, a number of ministers and senior politicians, as well as military and police chiefs.
