Friday, December 3, 2010

Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia and Unicel are carrying out a Water and Environmental Sanitation (WES) program in six provinces and 25 regencies and cities in Eastern Indonesia including West Nusa Tenggara.

"The WES program gets a Swedish and Dutch funding support of 23 million US dollars for the 2006-2010 period," WES coordinator Francois Brikke told the press here Wednesday.

He said three WES programs is focused on three main components namely villages, schools, and cities for the implementation of the program in 180 villages, five major cities, and 500 elementary schools.

Francois is in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, to attend a WES program coordinating meeting followed by 125 members of the working group in Indonesia.

Under the current WES program, national coordination is aimed at synergizing implementation of the WES program at central government down to regional administration level, indentifying and developing an alternative solution to issues and strategic problems arising from the program implementation and experiences.

Three regencies and one city had been chosen as the best regencies/cities including Mataram city, West Nusa Tenggara, now host of the national WES working conference.

In the meantime, East Sumba, Tarakan, and Biak Numpo regencies and the WES program are currently entering the final year.

The coordinating meeting is expected to produce a synergetic working plan between the players of national, provincial and regency level and implementation of the WES program for the 2011-2015 period.

Touching on clean water services, he said the building of waterworks and sanitation on a national level had not been so satisfactory.

According to official data, the proportion of households enjoying running water facilities reached only 18.38 pct, and those enjoying protected running water facilities reached 43.57 pct.

"With regard to the disposal of waste water, the proportion of people disposing their wastes arbitrarily is quite high, still reaching 30.7 pct," he said.
